Mercurial Travel? This is a question I get many times. These 2 words came together in 2014 when living in Bangkok and I decided to work on my video/photography skills so the best way to do it was through Instagram. Had to scroll down for some time but here is my first post 🙂 good memories. But the main reason that lies behind setting all of this up wasn’t just that.
There is bigger purpose for all of this
I didn’t want Instagram to become just a vanity thing, to see how many likes or followers I get. I wanted to inspire people to travel and meet new cultures. When it comes to tolerance and understanding of different ways of thinking, it can only be done by going to places in where you are not part of the majority.
When you take yourself out your own small box you will open your mind to new opinions, traditions and only then you will get that the world is way bigger than you thought it was.
There is so much violence and misunderstanding in the current world we live in that what we need is actually nothing else than getting out there to explore and dig deeper on the why some cultures think and act the way they do. It is hard to do this, there is a reason why the term “culture shock” exists because accepting something that you are not used to isn’t the most natural thing to do.
But when you take yourself out your own small box you will open your mind to new opinions, traditions and only then you will get that the world is way bigger than you thought it was.
Why Mercurial Travel?
Back then I was living in Bangkok and I needed a name for my account to highlight the topic of my posts. So it was simple, I googled, it took a while to find a not so used word or group of words (and also that no one had it in the app).
If you know me, you know that I’m a huge football fan (soccer in some parts of the world). Funnily enough I thought about football boots which name was “Mercurial” and the main reason they named it so was because they wanted the player to be unpredictable with those boots. All a branding stunt of course. That was my starting point.
“Mercurial” it self has many meanings but one of them and important for me is “unpredictable”. Unpredictable traveling? Yeah! That was it, Mercurial Traveler was born, until this point it is a term not widely used yet.
Step Into The Unknown
When traveling there are these times when you need to improvise and really just leave it to fate, you can’t control everything. This is the point where you are getting out of the comfort zone and in my opinion where traveling gets interesting. After a few times of getting that feeling of not knowing how things will end up or where you will end up, you will get addicted to it, trust me.
That for me is the best feeling in the world 🙂 on top of that if you can share that experience with someone, your relationship with that person will get to a whole new level.
So please get out there, get away and take a bus in a place where you don’t know the language, drive in a country where you’ve never been before or start talking to locals even if you need to communicate with signs. When that day is over and you take a look at you have done, you will want to do it again and again.
